The 1 Minute Typing Test Explained

The one minute typing test is the most widely used benchmark for measuring typing speed, and for good reason. Sixty seconds is long enough to produce a meaningful words-per-minute (WPM) figure but short enough that you type at close to your peak pace before fatigue sets in. It is the test most people mean when they ask "how fast do you type?"

During this test you type a passage of ordinary English prose. We count the characters you enter, divide by five to convert them into standardized words, and divide by the one minute of elapsed time. We then subtract any words you mistyped to produce your net WPM — the number that actually reflects useful, usable typing.

What your 1 minute score means

How to get a higher 1 minute score

Because the test is short, a good warm-up matters. Take one practice run first to settle your hands and read the rhythm of the passage. Then on your scored attempt, keep a steady, even cadence rather than sprinting and stalling — consistent keystrokes produce a higher net WPM than bursts of speed broken up by corrections. Keep your eyes on the words ahead, not on your fingers, so your hands always know what is coming next.

Accuracy is where most one-minute scores are won or lost. Each mistyped word is subtracted from your total, so a single careless error can cost you more than a moment of hesitation would have. If you find yourself making the same mistake repeatedly, slow down by five percent — you will usually finish with a higher net score.

Practice with longer tests too

A one minute result can be flattered by a short burst of fast typing. To understand your true sustainable speed, compare it against the 2 minute, 3 minute, and 5 minute tests. If your WPM drops sharply over the longer durations, endurance and consistency — not raw speed — are what you should train next. You can also check your numbers by hand with our WPM calculator.

Is a 1 minute test accurate?

It is a reliable snapshot of your peak speed, but it is more sensitive to a single good or bad moment than a longer test. For a stable long-term measure, average several one-minute runs or take a three-minute test.

What is the average 1 minute typing speed?

Around 40 words per minute for adults. Students and occasional computer users often sit between 30 and 40, while regular keyboard users land between 50 and 70.
